Hormel Foods Corp. HRL shares rose by 1.2% Thursday in premarket trade after the company reported a fiscal second-quarter profit which exceeded expectations, but sales that were below expectations, as volumes declined in all business segments. The net for the quarter ending April 30 dropped to $217.2 millions, or 40 cents per share, compared to the $261.6million, or 48cents per share, of the previous period. This was higher than the FactSet consensus of earnings per share, which was 39 cents. Sales dropped 3.8%, to $2.98 Billion. This was below the FactSet consensus estimate of $3.06 Billion. Volumes fell 5.6% with retail volumes down 7.1% and foodservice volume down 5.6%.
