3M Co. , MMM, +0.20% announced Monday that Michael Vale had been fired for cause as group president and chief country and business officer.

In a short statement, the company explained that the dismissal was due to “inappropriate conduct and violation to company policy which are unrelated to company operations and financial results”. The company did not provide any additional information.

The Post-it Notes maker and diversified industrial company has begun a search for its successor.

Vale has been with 3M for over 30 years. According to a press release, he was recently promoted to chief business and country officers.

He was responsible for the operations of customers, country governance, and emerging markets in three out of four business groups at the company: Safety and Industrial, Transportation and Electronics, and Consumer.

For now, the leaders of these three businesses will be reporting to Chief Executive Mike Roman.

The stock is down 16% year-to-date, while S&P 500 , SPX, +0.04%, has risen 7.4%.
